Big oil company propaganda having a heart! Just the free movie we'd like for Thanksgiving! This 78-minute semi-documentary from 1948 is one in the most lyrical American films available. In 1994, The Louisiana Story was selected for preservation inside United States National Film Registry with the Library of Congress to "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant." It is the story of an Cajun boy with his fantastic family, living on the bayous you might say of life we can barely imagine.
The boy's family rents land to the oil company, which comes in, drills, leaving everything the same as it was, clean and unspoiled with the exception that the family features a little more money. (Yes, it had been funded with the Standard Oil Company.)
The boy spends most of his time on his narrow boat (pirogue), floating down the bayous, prime snake and alligator habitat, together with his pet raccoon. First, I am thankful that The Passion of Joan of Arc was available. Second, I am thankful that The Passion of Joan of Arc was preserved. The director Carl Theodor Dreyer (more) died believing that the last copy had been destroyed. In a amount of weirdness that sounds much more a movie than the truth, an almost complete print is discovered in 1981 in a very janitor's closet of the Norwegian mental institution.
