Documentary Movie Life

Documentary Movie Life! Watching movies "online at no cost" is a type of practice. Even for movies that have not even attended DVD yet you can find sites all over the place where people can post movies to look at that people have secretly taken a video camera in a movie showing and recorded the entire movie to their computer. After that all it requires is a search from the internet to discover said movie. While the experience is not the same as paying for it and seeing it inside the theater those that just want to see a movie will find myriads of places online to look at.

Even YouTube has places for fan videos that disguise themselves as places to watch movies online. Piracy was once getting bootleg copies of VHS tapes and DVDs these days movie piracy might be even harder to manipulate thanks to the internet.

Financial Fallout

Movie piracy cost U.S. movie studios over 1.3 billion dollars in 2005 mostly due to internet in an article posted to Torrent Freak. A 2004 survey conducted through the Motion Picture Associated of America claims that relating to 3,600 internet users surveyed 24 percent said they had downloaded a movie online as outlined by an article in PC World. Surely the numbers have to be even more at this point. Further, 69% with the respondents felt that downloading a film online has not been a "major concern."

More recently, downloading movies and streaming the crooks to internet is really prevalent in Spain that that variety of DVD stores has dropped 25% since 2003 along with the illegal pirating of movies is threatening to finish the DVD industry in Spain altogether. Business Insider quoted Michael Lynton of Sony as saying "Spain is on the brink of don't being a viable industry for us." This was in late March of 2010.

The symptom in Spain could be a Catch-22. If DVDs are no longer sold in Spain then the marketplace for pirated copies of movies may a lot more lucrative and pirates may get more creative plus more ardent to the product. Just like making drugs illegal the demand won't disappear completely so prices will spike and an entire underground community may develop and things may get much more out of control.

Perhaps one other reason for piracy aside from not paying for expensive movie tickets is spoofed on this piece on Business Insider. Like movies in the theater, DVDs have previews, trailers, and advertising with them. When you can watch a pirated copy without having ads that merely simply extends to the movie without ten mins worth of advertising, possibly the feeling of apathy within our consumerist contemporary society is reaching a breaking point.

Anti-Piracy Measures

France and Britain are at the forefront in anti-piracy measures. In a New York Times article in March of 2010, Parliament is around the verge of considering a law that could allow authorities to fully cut off access to the internet to people who download movies illegally on the internet. France has passed a law as a result but has yet to implement it. Civil liberties groups are watching the law closely and so are wary the measure might have to go too far.

While these laws are created to protect a niche industry from taking a loss, again we need to point to illegal drugs just as one mirror to movie piracy. The problem with drugs aren't the tiny time dealers who are trying to make money when they have no idea any other way nevertheless the large suppliers and drug cartels who provide them with the drugs inside first place. Movie downloaders are some of the same way. The problem really should not be the people who watch free movies online for free but people that pirate the movies and put them for the internet in the first place. Cut off the head as well as the body dies.

In late March of 2010, The Hollywood Reporter posted an exclusive article stating that this US Copyright Group has sued over 20,000 torrent users for illegal piracy of movies. Another lawsuit is forthcoming that targets greater than 30,000 users for five particular movie titles. It appears the film companies are not taking this lightly.

New Formats

Blu-Ray discs and the new 3-D format can help to tackle the piracy overuse injury in their own way. If a motion picture is being touted as only able to be observed in 3-D that would be harder to get a copy from it straight beyond a camera version taken within the movie theater. The DVD can be the only way to look at it.

Another approach to combat piracy is always to make online services like Netflix cheaper. What you would lose in price might be made up for in volume. Perhaps making movie ticket prices just a little cheaper would help too. There are all kinds of things the film industry are capable of doing in order to combat piracy which includes nothing to do with filing a lawsuit.

For most of these measures being delivered to sue those who break the law you can find always sites like YouTube that often can't maintain illegal downloads. Episodes of shows, movies, plus much more can be found on sites like YouTube, Veoh, and LiveVideo all free of charge. Until those websites may be more vigilant about getting rid of copyrighted content then men and women continue to watch pirated videos.

On the whole, movie piracy is bad for the film industry because they lose money. The problem then becomes that if they can stem the piracy problem will movie ticket prices actually go down? Will online viewing services including NetFlix lower their prices if your movie marketplace is recouping doing this money? There has got to be a give-and-take attitude concerning this problem. There has have got to be some incentive for users to wish to pay for a film. Spending money is always good for the economy even if it means investing in enjoying a show.

Another factor to consider is the current state in the economy. People are still hurting financially and definately will want to get things at no cost or little cost so long as possible. When that carrot goes away then the movie industry must adapt to lure those customers to seeing movies otherwise the movie piracy problem will just read more creative instead of disappear.
